Ginger, Turmeric, Lemon and Pineapple Juice

Ginger, Turmeric and Pineapple Juice

I absolutely LOVE this detoxifying juice made with ginger, turmeric, lemon, pineapple, and spring water. It is a great, albeit zesty, way to start the day.

An expensive juice habit…

The original inspiration came from Garden of Flavor who makes the delicious Turmeric Tonic that has gotten me through many achy mornings. GOF’s Turmeric Tonic contains lemon, ginger, turmeric, agave, mint, cayenne pepper, and water. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and ginger do a body good, while the addition of cayenne pepper helps with nutrient absorption.

Needed to find a cheaper solution to my expensive juice habit…

My hubby was not so thrilled with the price tag so I had to come up with a compromise. Enter one mid-range masticating juicer and we were off to the imitation races. I happened to be starting my 1st round of Whole30 around the same time so I had to eliminate the agave found in the original Turmeric Tonic. I replaced the agave with pineapple and it was a home run! The sweetness of the pineapple perfectly balanced the spiciness of the ginger and the turmeric added an earthiness that countered the citrus bite from the lemon. I found that my drink was spicy enough with a generous amount of ginger so I left out the cayenne. I also dropped the mint that is used in Garden of Flavor’s Turmeric Tonic because I found it too difficult to juice properly, while steeping it didn’t infuse the drink with the flavor that I was looking for. All-in-all, I am really happy with the result of my experimentation.

Support for a small business…

If you are ever at Whole Foods or in Cleveland, OH, be sure to check out Garden of Flavor’s Turmeric Tonic or their other juices. This is a phenomenal small company that I try to support when I can (or when my husband isn’t looking ;).

Serves: 4 Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pineapple, outer sheath removed
  • 2 lemons
  • 1 large ginger root (about the size of the palm of your hand), peeled
  • handful or turmeric roots, peeled
  • Approximately 2 cups of water

Instructions

1

Once pineapple sheath is removed, turn pineapple on its side and cut 1-2 inch slices so that you have several "rounds". Cut rounds into 1-1.5 inch "strips".

2

Slice ginger root and turmeric root in to small pieces, about 1-2 inches.

3

Turn on juicer and add 2 turmeric pieces, followed by 2 ginger pieces, followed by 2 pineapple slices. Continue this sequence until all of the ginger and turmeric roots are juiced. Finish by adding the rest of the pineapple.

4

Once the pineapple, ginger, and turmeric have been juiced it is time to juice the lemon.

5

Roll each lemon several times on the counter. This helps to break up the peel membrane so that more juice is released. Cut lemons in half and use a hand lemon squeezer to juice the lemons.

6

Use a strainer to strain the juice into a 4 cup liquid measuring cup.

7

Pour strained juice into 4 small ball jars. Fill just below 3/4 of ball jar. Be sure to fill equally.

8

Add water to bring juice to the top of each of the ball jars.

9

Place top on jars and refrigerate up to a week. Be sure to shake gently before drinking.

Notes

Because fruit has different amounts of juice, you may have to experiment with the juice-to-water ratio. Ideally, you should have 4 cups of juice and then add about 1/2 cup of water to each ball jar but you may like a different ratio. Also, you can add a dash of cayenne pepper if you would like even more spice. Feel free to experiment with the amounts of ginger and turmeric so that you can find the right flavor for you. Have fun!
